How to Secure a Steam Account After Delivery

Published Oct 30, 2026

Step-by-step guide to securing your Steam account right after delivery: change email, reset password, and enable two-factor authentication before you play.

Why the first ten minutes after delivery matter

The moment your Steam account is handed over, a short window opens where the original credentials and the recovery email still belong to the seller. Closing that window fast is the whole point of securing a Steam account after delivery. It is the difference between owning your access and sharing it.

Before you do anything else, make sure you can log in. Test the login on a device you control. If the credentials do not work, pause here and contact the store before changing anything.

Step 1: Change the recovery email first

Log in on the Steam website and open Account Details, then the Contact Info section. Find the email address on file and replace it with one only you control. Steam will ask you to confirm the new address, so have your inbox ready. Until this step is done, the previous email owner can still trigger a password reset.

This is the step people most often skip, and it is the most important one. A Steam account's recovery email is the master key. Change it before you change anything else, and confirm it fully before moving on.

Step 2: Change the password

In the same Account Details menu, open Change Password and set a new one that you have never used anywhere else. There is no shortcut here. A reused password is the quickest way to hand the account right back.

After you save it, Steam signs you out of other sessions. Log back in with the new password to confirm everything still works before you touch your games.

Step 3: Enable Steam Guard two-factor authentication

Open Steam Guard under your account security settings and turn on mobile authenticator protection if you can. The mobile app generates the codes and also confirms any new-device login. If you prefer not to use the app, Steam Guard via email is still far better than nothing.

Keep your backup codes somewhere safe. They are the way back in if you ever lose your phone, and losing them is the most common way people lock themselves out of their own account.

Step 4: Check region and linking restrictions before you play

Steam accounts are tied to a store region, and that region decides which titles you can activate and which payment methods appear at checkout. If you picked a Steam account for a region-locked game, confirm the account's region matches the game before you start. Launching a title from the wrong region can flag the account.

Also confirm nothing is linked that you did not expect. Check the account's linked phone number, email and any third-party sign-ins, and remove what is not yours. Playing online with a stranger's credentials still attached is a risk you can remove in one sitting.

How to know it worked

Sign out of Steam completely and log back in with your new email, your new password and a fresh Steam Guard code. If all three work and the recovery email shows yours, the account is now under your control. Log in on a second device next, and confirm the new-device confirmation prompt comes to you.

Know the rules before you rely on this account

Account sales and account sharing violate the terms of service of most publishers, Steam included. That means suspension or permanent loss of the account and its games is always possible, and it is on the buyer to understand that before spending money. Securing the account well reduces the risk of casual hijacking, but it does not change the publisher's underlying rules.

If a stored account is ever reclaimed, check the product page for the store's refund or replacement policy. Nexys handles recalls case by case, so read the terms on the specific listing before you rely on a purchase.

If something did not work

If the email change will not go through, the new email may already be attached to another Steam account. Steam only allows one account per verified email, so use a fresh address or remove it from the old account first. If the password reset fails even from your new email, contact the store with your order details before the original seller has time to act.

Start with the right foundation. Browse the Steam accounts at Nexys and secure your new login the moment it lands.
